Australia crushed South Africa by 276 runs in Mackay, handing them their biggest defeat in ODI history and pulling one back to finish the series 1-2. The previous heaviest loss for South Africa was by 243 runs against India at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2023, but this result went well beyond that.
Australia’s mammoth win at the Great Barrier Reef was built on the brilliance of Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green and youngster Cooper Connolly. Head smashed 142 from 103 balls, Marsh added a steady 100, and Green powered his way to an unbeaten 118 from just 55 balls.
Australia vs South Africa, 3rd ODI Highlights
Together, they lifted Australia to 431 for two and their second-largest ODI victory margin, only behind the 309-run hammering of the Netherlands at the 2023 World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Connolly then starred with the ball, taking a career-best 5 for 22 to complete a one-sided contest.
Australia’s dominance began with an opening partnership of 250 between Head and Marsh. Head was in full flow, hitting 17 fours and five sixes, while Marsh held the innings together with a well-paced century. Once the platform was set, Green exploded in the final overs, smashing a 47-ball hundred with six fours and eight sixes at a staggering strike rate of 214.54.
Carey also chipped in with a brisk 50 to push the total past 430, leaving South Africa staring at an impossible chase. With the batters having done their job, Connolly’s left-arm spin proved decisive. He broke South Africa’s middle order, removing key players like Dewald Brevis and Tony de Zorzi, and ensured the chase never got going.
South Africa’s reply never looked convincing. Sean Abbott and Xavier Bartlett struck early, leaving the visitors 50 for 4 inside nine overs. Brevis tried to fight back with a 28-ball 49 that included five sixes, but once he fell to Connolly, the innings unravelled.
From 124 for 5, South Africa lost their last five wickets for just 31 runs, bowled out for 155 in under 25 overs. While Keshav Maharaj was named Player of the Series for his steady all-round efforts, this match belonged entirely to Australia.
After losing the first two games, the hosts signed off the series in style, showing their batting depth and bowling strength in a record-breaking win.
