Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of achieving a historic feat, needing just 97 runs to become the quickest Indian batsman to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander has the opportunity to surpass Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing, 49-year-old record when India takes on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, commencing on July 2.
India's Yashasvi Jaiswal aims to break Sunil Gavaskar's record.
Jaiswal's consistent performance has been a significant positive for India amidst a challenging transition phase in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley showcased his exceptional talent, although his efforts couldn't prevent India's five-wicket defeat. Despite setting England a formidable target of 371 runs, India was stunned by the composed chase led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, giving England a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.
Jaiswal's individual form remains a key source of hope for India as they aim to rebound strongly at Edgbaston. In just 20 Tests, he has accumulated 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved the milestone in his 23rd Test back in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag follow, having reached 2,000 runs in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable temperament, Jaiswal has the opportunity to join and even surpass these legendary figures, providing India with a crucial boost in a must-win Test match.
